Haematology Department

Location: Southampton General Hospital

The Haematology Project at Southampton General Hospital aimed to modernise the department and create a more efficient, patient-centred environment through close collaboration between hospital staff, architects, and partners. A key focus was improving patient bedrooms to enhance comfort during long isolation periods. Notably, the project introduced a colour-coded zoning system, aligning patient areas with matching drug prep cabinets to streamline workflows and support clinical efficiency.

Improved Efficiency – Clinicians had everything they needed within their designated zones, reducing time spent locating medications and minimising disruption caused by multiple staff members accessing the same space.

Enhanced Clarity – Colour-coded zones made it immediately clear which preparation area aligned with each patient room, supporting safer and more accurate medication delivery.

A Better Patient Environment – The use of colour not only improved operational functionality but also softened the clinical feel of the space, contributing to a more welcoming and therapeutic setting for patients.
